Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Updates Nurses on Latest Developments in Critical Care Medicine

Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), managed by Cleveland Clinic, recently briefed nursing staff on cutting-edge developments in critical care medicine and the treatment of critically ill patients, in the latest in its Critical Care Refresher Series (CRS).

The session, provided lectures and highlights in recent advances in critical care medicine, including workshops and training on different procedures. Staying updated on techniques and knowledge is crucial in order to ensure the best possible outcomes for critically ill patients.

“Critical care is a vital part of medicine, because we are dealing with patients who are in truly devastating conditions and need the best possible treatment. We need to be constantly focused on understanding the latest innovations in the critical care field – medicine is always moving so fast and it’s vital that you are able to keep up,” said Dr. Tarek Wahba, Specialist Physician in the Intensive Care Department, and CRS Director.

“While we have focused on physicians in previous sessions, the nurses are a vital part of the critical care team and it is essential that they experience continuing medical education – we want to help this noble profession deliver the very best service,” Dr. Wahba added, who is an International Instructor in Paediatric and Adult Critical Care Support, affiliated by the European Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Topics covered in the session included assessment of seriously ill patients, cardiac output monitoring, fluid management in critically ill patients, blood gas interpretation, and respiratory assessment, amongst others.

Future sessions will cover other members of the critical care teams, Dr. Wahba said, to help ensure that all fields of care are integrated and that patients receive the very best possible care and support.
