The Friends of Cancer Patients Society cordially invites you to attend and cover the Relay for Life 24 Hour Walkathon – the first Relay for Life event to be held in the MENA region – on Friday, 17 November at 03:00 pm, in partnership with American Cancer Society.
Relay for Life aims to promote community solidarity with cancer patients, with the overnight element of the walk designed to engender empathy for those whose physical pain is exacerbated by the sense of loneliness that can be felt during the nighttime. The event will raise funds for cancer patients in the UAE through the registration fee for participation, through the proceeds from the sale of products at kiosks at the event venue and through the sponsorship arranged by the relayers. All proceeds will go towards supporting cancer patients and their families, with the organisers saying that the walkathon aligns perfectly with the UAE’s Year of Giving.
Relay for Life can be traced to 1985 when colorectal surgeon Dr. Gordy Klatt in the USA successfully raised $27,000 for his local cancer charity. Since then, it has gone on to become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world. Relay for Life has to date raised more than $5 billion (AED18.3 billion) in support of cancer patients worldwide, with the event now taking place in 29 countries.
