rak-hospitalJanuary 18, 2017, Dubai, UAE: In order to take charge of one’s cardiac health and to highlight the high-risk relationship between diabetes and cardio vascular diseases, RAK Diabetes Center, Jumeirah, has organised a complimentary heart check at its venue on Saturday, January 21, 2017. The campaign entails free tests including ECG, random blood sugar, blood pressure, height and weight, BMI and consultation with specialist cardiologist. The drive also aims to draw the masses’ attention towards danger signs such as chest pain, breathlessness, palpitation, fatigue, headache and dizziness – all of which can be indication of potential heart trouble, particularly among those who are 40 years and above. The health check will be open to visitors from 10am to 4pm.

Studies point out that diabetic patients are more at risk of dying from heart disease and stroke than those without diabetes: there is a three-fold greater chance of heart failure, while the risk of transient ischemic attacks is two to six times higher. Coupled with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, hypertension, smoking and obesity, the chances of developing diabetic heart diseases increase exponentially – at least two to four times higher, as per World Heart Federation. These include heart failure, coronary heart disease and Diabetic Cardiomyopathy (a disease that damages the structure and function of the heart). Moreover, the UAE is also witnessing an increasing number of heart health issues in younger age group, making regular health screening all the more imperative and essential to avoid further damage.

“One in four residents in the UAE is a diabetic, while heart disease still remain the number one killer in the country,” says Dr Mukesh Nathani, Specialist Cardiologist at RAK Diabetes Center, Jumeirah, “When we connect the dots, the significance of heart diseases in a diabetic patient becomes too significant to turn a blind eye. Having said that, monitoring cardiac health is just as important for non-diabetics as well, particularly if there’s medical history of the disease in the family. Moreover, besides giving people opportunity to avail complimentary check-up, our aim is to teach the masses never to ignore even seemingly innocuous symptoms that could be a tell-tale sign of cardiac disorder.”

Dr Raza Siddiqui, CEO Arabian Healthcare Group, the holding company of RAK Diabetes Center, said, “Being a progressive disease, managing diabetes is a task in itself since it can often lead to other health issues. Deteriorating cardiac health is one of the most common fall out, which is why, it is always a good idea to get check-up done to find out how things stand. At RAK Diabetes Center, we believe that on-time screening can potentially catch a number of diseases which can be nipped in the bud”.

RAK Diabetes Center, Jumeriah, offers a holistic approach towards diabetes management and other related health issues offering state-of-the-art medical services, under the guidance of exceptional medical staff.
