November 5 2015, DUBAI UAE: The Rugby Sevens Long Lunch was once again a great success with former rugby union star Andy Nicol and rugby sevens legend Eric Rush entertaining the 800 strong audience today. The annual Rugby Sevens Long Lunch is part of the buildup in the excitement of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens taking place on 3 -5 December.
Eric Rush is most fondly remembered as a full-time sevens player where he represented New Zealand for 17 years and captained them to a Gold Medal victory at the 1998 Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur, the World Seven Series tittle for six consecutive years, the Sevens World Cup championship in 2001 and to a Gold Medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, United Kingdom.
Eric Rush said: “The growth of the Tournament has been fantastic and it’s great to be back in Dubai and be part of such a great sporting event. Sevens has developed significantly over the last few years and with the upcoming Rio Olympics, international attention on the sport will only continue to grow. We are looking forward to an exciting Sevens season ahead.”
Nicol’s sterling rugby career includes 23 caps for Scotland, winning the Calcutta Cup in 2000 as captain; he was also a member of two tours with the British and Irish Lions and enjoyed a long and successful career with Bath. Since retiring, Nicol has commentated for the British Broadcasting Corporation and is CEO of ABSTRACT, a business consultancy specialising in people development.
In an interview before the Long Lunch commenced, Andy Nicol said: “The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is one of the biggest events on the circuit and it’s an honour to be part of the build up to this event at the Rugby Sevens Long Lunch.
