24-hour Relay For Life walkathon comes to Sharjah on 17 November

Volunteers are the heart and soul of any fund-raising initiative. People are undeniably the pillars of success of a campaign that requires community to be driven, selfless and charitable. Relay For Life (RFL) is a volunteer driven cancer awareness event that honours cancer survivors, remembers loved ones, and helps in the fight against cancer. The 24-hour walkathon is the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world and is being brought to the UAE by the non-profit organisation, Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) on 17 and 18 November at the American University of Sharjah (AUS).

If being involved in community development is something that interests you and you look for ways to devote some of your time to participate in charitable causes, Sharjah is the place to be starting from the 17th of November at 4:00 PM until the same time the following morning, as it prepares to host the UAE’s first-ever Relay For Life event to raise awareness about cancer and encourage community collaboration to fight the disease.

Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) devised several flexible ways of volunteering that will allow both who have the luxury of time and those who don’t to be able to contribute effectively to this noble cause. Alongside volunteering opportunities with the several teams that have been formed to help out at a Relay event, there are numerous responsibilities that the team will need helping hands for on the day of the event. Tents need to go up, Luminaria bags need to be lit at night, T-shirts sold and much more. There are many small ways to help out that will make a huge difference. Your participation will be historic not only because you will be responsible for the successful execution of an American Cancer Society ‘Relay for Life’ event in the MENA region for the first time, help raise funds that will be crucial to hanging the circumstances of people grappling with life threatening disease, and will be an excellent opportunity to show solidarity with cancer patients and their families, but will also be immensely useful in raising your personal awareness about cancer.  

Everyone is eligible to participate in the UAE Relay for Life. Tickets are priced at AED 100 for adults and AED 60 for children below 14 years. Individuals can register and encourage their friends and families to sponsor their participation and raise money for the wonderful cause of cancer awareness.
