• Diabetics are advised to plan with their doctors how to manage sugar levels when fasting
• Daman’s Community Health department consists of 25 medical experts responsible for community health outreach and activities
Managing and controlling blood sugar levels during Ramadan is the most discussed topic amongst fasting diabetics, according to National Health Insurance Company – Daman, based on heightened activity across its 8,000 members using its diabetes management programme.
17.3% of UAE adults suffer from diabetes, according to recent statistics from the International Diabetes Federation. Daman members can receive personalised support through the programme which is managed by the company’s Community Health department – a unit of 25 medical experts with specialisations across different fields.
During Ramadan, Daman advises individuals to consult their doctor or clinician beforehand to agree on the best means of controlling diabetes during and after fasting, with particular attention on mitigating against hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia.
Hyperglycaemia refers to a high blood sugar level and is defined by readings of 300 mg/dl or higher. Early onset symptoms include fatigue, blurred vision and weight loss.
Hypoglycaemia, or low blood sugar, is defined by readings of 60 mg/dl or below. At early stages, symptoms include tiredness, dizziness and heart palpitations.
First launched in 2009, Daman’s diabetes management programme is designed to support diabetic Daman and Thiqa members in making healthy lifestyle choices. This includes diet and exercise to improve members’ quality of life, as well as raising awareness of their condition in the process.
Dr Nawal Khaled, Director of the Community Health Department at Daman, said: “In recognising the importance of managing diabetes and the significant improvement in quality of life that can be realised through lifestyle changes, Daman has invested in expertise and innovative services to support members with the condition. Our comprehensive approach, which involves direct communication and continuous support through a localised smartphone app, remains the only one of its kind in the region.”
She added: “The positive feedback we have received from our members and users has demonstrated that our approach has been successful in creating real understanding, awareness and lifestyle change among society.
Daman has a series of longstanding programmes specialised to help manage long-term and chronic conditions. Those include asthma, weight and maternity management programmes which form part of Daman’s commitment to creating healthy communities across the UAE.
