United Arab Emirates, Dubai – 3 October, 2016: Surgeons from Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery in Dubai successfully performed a minimally invasive spinal surgery called microdisectomy on a patient to relieve him from chronic and severe back pain. The surgery was performed after the patient rushed to the hospital with a complaint of crippling pain in the right leg. The patient, Mr. Sreejith Payyazhi, a 36-year-old shipping professional who lives with his family in Dubai, first experienced back pain in 2008. He met several doctors, who prescribed physiotherapy and manual therapy sessions to relieve the pain. However, these measures did not affect any real change in his condition until he consulted Dr Sebouh Z. Kassis, Specialist Neurosurgeon and Head of the Spinal Unit at Burjeel Hospital of Advanced Surgery, in 2010.
Since then, Dr Kassis has helped the patient manage his back pain successfully. The patient, however, was prone to episodes of back pain once every year during which he was bedridden for three to four days. Dr. Kassis treated the patient during these periods with medication and physiotherapy to help relieve the pain and alleviate the symptoms.
“We have been helping Mr. Payyazhi manage his back pain over the past six years. However, recently in May, he experienced severe and crippling pain in his right leg. We treated him with a spinal injection (epidural infiltration) for pain relief but the pain persisted. We advised him on undergoing a minimally invasive spinal surgery called microdiscectomy on his two herniated discs L4-5 and L5-S1. During this surgery, we removed portions of the herniated disc to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve root. This procedure, which is done under general anesthesia, is very effective in treating sciatica pain caused by disc herniation. Sciatica is a painful condition caused due to the compression of the spinal nerve root, a situation often caused by herniated lumbar discs.
“Mr. Payyazhi’s family was initially very apprehensive as they were worried about the risks of spinal surgery but they were very happy with the results as was the patient, as the pain was eliminated within 24 hours of the operation. Mr. Payyazhi was also discharged within 24 hours of the surgery. Today, he has fully recovered from the pain and is leading an active life much to his relief and that of his family who couldn’t bear to see him in so much pain. We are very satisfied with the results and extremely happy to see him leading a pain-free lifestyle,” said Dr. Kassis.
Mr. Payyazhi was also very grateful and appreciative of the treatment he received from the team at Burjeel Hospital of Advanced Surgery. “I have been a patient of Dr. Kassis at Burjeel Hospital for six years and have total faith in the skill and abilities of his team. I was in a bad condition and in incredible pain but three months since the procedure; I am back to activities such as swimming and walking without a limp due to the pain. I soon plan to join the gym as well. I believe that this horrible experience is well behind me thanks to Burjeel Hospital and its amazing doctors,” he said.
