Capital Health, the UAE’s best-in-class integrated health group, today signed a partnership with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, (formerly Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago), acknowledged as the US number one healthcare provider in physical medicine and rehabilitation for more than a quarter of a century[1].

The partnership will see the delivery of SRALab’s world-renowned model of care at Capital Health’s Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital (SRH) in Abu Dhabi. Set to open later this year, the hospital – a first of its kind in the region – is designed in response to the UAE’s Vision 2021 to achieve a world-class healthcare system, and ensure that local patients no longer have to travel abroad to receive the very best treatment and care.

The opening of SRH will deliver an acute, sub-acute and long-term rehabilitation, and long-term care, facility with outpatient capabilities, complemented by highly specialised skills and equipment, including the latest bionics and robotics, in the heart of the UAE’s capital. The partnership with SRALab (formerly RIC) will ensure world-leading standards of treatment and care in the UAE for patients who are often recovering from the most severe, complex conditions — from traumatic brain and spinal cord injury to stroke, amputation and cancer-related impairment. SRALAb’s applied research focuses particularly in the areas of neuroscience, bionic medicine, musculoskeletal medicine and technology transfer, with a unique model that enables patients to have 24/7 access to the brightest minds, the latest research and the best opportunity for recovery.

H.E. Sheikh Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Hamed, Chairman of Department of Health, said: “We are steadfast in our commitment to providing easy access to the highest quality healthcare services for all members of the society. With the partnership between Capital Health and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago), we witness another remarkable achievement from the private sector that aims to open new horizons to raise the benchmark of rehabilitative health support available in Abu Dhabi. The presence of the new specialist rehabilitation hospital is in line with the Department of Health’s medical tourism vision for healthcare and contributing to position Abu Dhabi among the best cities in the quality of health care services.”

Dr. Mishal Al Kasimi, Chief Executive Officer of Capital Health, said: “Partnering with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) is an important milestone for Capital Health as we create specialized hospitals and medical centres to serve the needs of UAE residents and medical tourists, in line with UAE Vision 2021 and Plan Abu Dhabi 2030. SRALab has developed a model for one of the most innovative care facilities in the world, known for its science-driven breakthroughs in human ability. Our ability to apply this model at Capital Health’s Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital will change the region’s healthcare landscape by transforming the approach taken to patients’ recovery from debilitating illness and injury – whether they are adults or children, and over short and long term. Ultimately, our advanced infrastructure will do away with the need for patients in the UAE to travel abroad for treatment and will help meet the growing demand for the country’s medical tourism market.”

Joanne C. Smith, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, commented: “We are delighted to partner with Dr. Al Kasimi and Capital Health to advance human ability for patients in the UAE. Capital Health’s medical and operational expertise, coupled with our commitment to best-in-class care and research, will raise the bar in rehabilitation medicine and create a leading center of excellence. We embrace SRH’s vision to be the most trusted rehabilitation provider in the region and applaud the leadership team’s thoughtful and diligent process to create a world-class facility powered by exceptional talent.”

Capital Health launched in October 2017 with two flagship facilities in Abu Dhabi under development. The 166-bed Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital (SRH) will provide acute and long-term rehabilitation care, along with in-patient, out-patient and home care capabilities. Health Shield Medical Center will be a multi-specialty healthcare facility located at Ministries Complex next to Khalifa Park.
