An artist with strength in contemporary Arabic Calligraphy, ornaments and modern arts
Sanaa Merchant is a visual artist known for traditional Arabian themes with a modern perspective.
The artist’s work ranges from ornamental works to modernism in abstract and calligraphic forms with the use of vibrant bold colors and dimensional forms giving it a thought-provoking essence. Sanaa also captures an extra touch of detail by using intense pen and ink compositions.
“The contemporary results of my work often break the rules of the conventional outlook usually imposed on artworks influenced by Arabic calligraphy. My style is contemporary and enriched with layered colors.” Says Sanaa Merchant about her style.
Sanaa Merchant has become well renowned for adding modern elements in traditional themes such as designs that have primarily evolved from Islamic calligraphy and motifs featuring intricate patterns of geometrical shapes.
“Having been born in UAE my surroundings inspire me. The rich Islamic heritage, the Islamic teachings, long-standing Arab customs, the history of the country and the wealth of artefacts all make their way into my style and are reflected in abstract architectural forms, minarets, jewellery, khanjars, coins and other ornaments.” She says.
“My recent work has shifted focus in modern abstracts and Arabic letter forms breaking from the norm to the contemporary style of lettering. I continue to constantly try out new ideas and up to date practices.” Sanaa adds. Her former works have usually been medium sized watercolour paintings and have in time evolved to large sized oil and acrylic paintings on canvas. This has appealed much of her onlookers and buyers.
Sanaa’s Artwork “Hidden” has been selected by the 6th Annual Ras Al Khaimah Fine Art Festival and will be on display there from 16th February until 2nd March, 2018.
Sanaa will also be exhibiting in a group exhibition organised by Noon Art Gallery at the World Art Dubai at Dubai World Trade Centre from April 18-21.
