Established in 2017 by Aya Toukan, The ART Trove is a fusion of artisan-made products and contemporary, handcrafted home-décor. It stays true to Jordanian/Palestinian craftsmanship and expertise by working with local artisans and craftsmen.
From its inception, The ART Trove aims to support the development of communities, working closely with local NGO’s and offering training, guidance and professional development to locally engaged artisans. The brand fuses traditional techniques and time-honored crafts with contemporary ingenuity and savoir-faire to form a unique design hybrid.
The skills involved in creating these unique objects are as varied as the items themselves and are made using materials such as plexiglass and beads. The brand offers a diverse range of lifestyle items that include trays, multi-purpose boxes, games, coasters, placemats and ornaments. Sustainability is also at the heart of the brand, committing to sustainable practices through up-cycling and reusing materials to minimize waste.
The designer:
Founder and creative director Aya Toukan was born and raised in Amman, Jordan. She moved to London to continue her studies, completing her undergraduate degree at Regents University London and undertook short courses at other art and design schools. It wasn’t until 2017, when she began volunteering with NGOs in Jordan where she met female artisans producing independent work to support their families, which she would soon discover to alter the course of her life and play a pivotal role in the launch of The ART Trove. Realizing traditional craftsmanship is perhaps the most tangible manifestation of intangible cultural heritage, she began conducting an experimental project, where she provided artists with materials and designs to make unique products and bring them to market. After seeing the effects that this collaborative work brought and the financial independence that it gave to the ladies she worked with, Aya realized that she could help these rural communities and share their art with a wider audience – marking the beginning of The ART Trove.
