The Sustainable City, the Middle East’s first fully-operational sustainable community, is supporting the Special Olympics Carbon Offset programme announced by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Higher Committee of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, by planting 30 Ghaf trees.
The Special Olympics Carbon Offset programme aims to offset the carbon emissions from the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 by increasing the country’s green cover that absorbs the emissions and mitigates their adverse effects.
Earlier this year, The Sustainable City had named one of the Ghaf trees in the community as ‘The Tree of Tolerance’ to mark the celebration of the ‘Year of Tolerance’. The net zero energy community has planted more than 500 Ghaf trees within the community, over the last four years.
The Special Olympics World Games 2019 welcomes more than 7,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing 190 countries to compete in 24 officially sanctioned sports from March 14 to 21 across world-class venues in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
The Sustainable City’s Ghaf tree planting ceremony was shared on the Gherasuae App, which offers information on indigenous plant species, and on social media using the hashtag #SOCarbonOffset.
