Abu Dhabi, UAE: On International Nurses Day, we honour the nursing workforce, who are not only an essential part of the healthcare system, but its beating heart, and often the closest human connection patients experience in their most vulnerable moments. Behind every recovery journey, every moment of reassurance, every clinical decision, and every integrated care experience, there is a nurse carrying an profound human and professional responsibility; one that goes beyond a role and becomes a daily mission grounded in knowledge, compassion, patience, and strength.

Over the years, the role of nursing has evolved significantly. It is no longer limited to the traditional roles it was once associated with but has become central to the future of healthcare and a key partner in the transformation taking place across health systems globally. Nurses today work with artificial intelligence, health data, genomics, digital care, and future-focused treatment models, contributing directly to improving quality of life, accelerating recovery, and enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of healthcare services.

In a world facing increasingly complex health challenges, nurses have become among the most influential contributors to healthcare continuity, quality, and operational resilience. They are the ones who remain closest to patients throughout every detail of the care journey, offering reassurance to families and serving as the vital bridge between technology and humanity, and between medical knowledge and the lived human experience of care.

Investing in the nursing workforce is therefore no longer optional; it is a strategic necessity for the future of health. Empowering nurses, strengthening their capabilities, and creating more opportunities for specialisation, leadership, and innovation means building a healthcare system that is more prepared, more resilient, and more capable of responding to the needs of the future.

This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” reflects Abu Dhabi’s vision for an intelligent, advanced, people-first healthcare system, and reinforces our belief that the future of health begins with empowering those who stand on the frontlines every day, making a real difference in people’s lives.

On this day, I extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to every nurse who has chosen to be a source of strength, comfort, and hope for others. You are not only part of the healthcare system, you help carry it forward every day through your dedication, compassion, and unwavering sense of responsibility, helping build healthier, safer, and more resilient communities for generations to come.
