Protection Begins at Home: Collective Effort to Prevent RSV in Children

Share

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common seasonal illness that causes respiratory issues in infants worldwide. Hospitals often face high pressure due to the volume of young children requiring care and treatment for breathing difficulties, which is a primary concern for their families.

Dr. Markus Knuf, Head of the Children’s Hospital in Worms, Germany, and Paediatric Infectious Disease Consultant at the University of Mainz, emphasised that enhanced awareness, preventive action, and early intervention have proven to be remarkably effective in Germany. He added that through these concerted measures, the country achieved an 80 per cent reduction in RSV-related hospital admissions compared to the previous season, which stands as clear evidence that early awareness plays a major role in protecting children’s health.

In the UAE, Dr. Eslam El Baroudy, Professor and Paediatric Consultant at Cairo University and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, asserted that RSV prevention extends beyond medical treatment, beginning within homes and communities. He noted that simple daily habits, such as regular handwashing and disinfecting children’s toys, can significantly lower the risk of infection. Dr. El Baroudy further underlined the significance of educating parents and teachers to reduce transmission and prevent complications among children.

Baptiste de Clarens, General Manager for the Greater Gulf, Vaccines at Sanofi, reaffirmed the company’s robust collaboration with health experts and institutions across the UAE to strengthen preventive practices and enhance public awareness. He added that these efforts ensure that every child enters the new season healthier, safer, and better protected.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate the critical importance of community education and consistent preventive habits in safeguarding children’s well-being, reducing the burden on healthcare systems, and fostering a healthier and resilient society.
