From Self-Taught Designer to Head of Creative: My Dubai Journey

Share

  • A self-taught creative career built step by step through design, production, agency work and creative leadership in Dubai.

When I arrived in Dubai in 2017, I did not come with a formal design degree or a long list of creative achievements. I studied Computer Programming in the Philippines, but I had always been interested in visual design. What I had was curiosity, determination, and a willingness to keep learning.

My first opportunity in Dubai was with a corporate gift company, where I worked as a graphic designer. It was a practical introduction to the industry because I was not only creating designs, but also learning how ideas move from the computer screen into real products. Later, I moved into production and became responsible for digital printing and production work. That experience taught me to think beyond appearance and understand materials, accuracy, deadlines, and how a design performs in the real world.

After several years, I joined a cafe and restaurant business as a graphic designer. This gave me the chance to work on different kinds of marketing materials and strengthened my understanding of branding and communication. When the company later developed an agency division, I moved into a Creative Graphic Designer role in Dubai Design District. Working in an agency environment exposed me to a faster pace, different industries, and more demanding creative challenges.

Today, I work in Business Bay as Head of Creative for a marketing consultancy. My responsibilities have expanded from creating individual designs to developing creative directions, brand identities, digital content, UI/UX work, campaigns, and visual systems for different clients.

The most important part of my journey is that much of what I know was learned through self-study. I spent many hours watching tutorials, studying professional work, practicing with tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Figma, and learning from every project I handled. Dubai became the place where that self-taught foundation was tested and developed through real professional experience.

My career has not been a straight path. I moved through design, production, hospitality, agency work, and consultancy, and every stage added something important to the way I work today. The challenges pushed me to become more adaptable, disciplined, and open to learning.

For me, Dubai represents opportunity, but also responsibility. The city gave me an environment where I could build a creative career step by step. My story is still developing, but I hope it can encourage other self-taught creatives to keep improving their skills, stay patient with the process, and take every opportunity to learn.
